National Medical Librarians & Health Literacy Month
October is a busy time of year for all of us! It's also home to a number
of events celebrating information and information professionals! National Medical Librarians Month
was established in 1997 by the Medical Library Association to recognize
the contributions of medical
librarians to education, research, patient care, and the community. This
year's theme is "Are You a Risk Taker?" focusing on partnering with
librarians to find the best and right
information! Just a few highlights from the Medical Library as we celebrate the month:
- 4th Annual Organ & Bone Marrow Donor Drive registered 48 new bone marrow donors and 23
new organ donors with our volunteers speaking to 242 total individuals!
- 3rd Annual Gaming Fundraiser raised over $200 in support of Beaumont Children's Hospital with help from the Pediatrics Interest Group!
- In October, medical library faculty taught 7 instruction sessions both within and outside the curriculum as well as sponsored faculty development touching 322 students and faculty!
|Health Literacy Month promotes access to high-quality,
health information for patients and consumers. In support of this month,
M1 medical students learned how to counsel patients on locating
reliable health information online from library faculty as part of the Art & Practice of
Medicine course. Library faculty also spoke with over 60 community members
at the Harvest of Health Fest at Avondale High School on October 23, promoting quality health information and MedlinePlus, NLM's free database of high-quality, authoritative consumer health information.|
thank you, our OUWB community, for your continued support and
participation in our initiatives!
