April is National Autism Awareness Month!

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) are an ever-growing, yet misunderstood set of developmental disorders estimated to affect 1 in 88 children and continue for a lifetime. ASDs impact an individual's social, behavioral, and communication skills and do not differentiate by race, ethnicity, or socioeconomic status.1

To recognize National Autism Awareness Month, the Medical Library is highlighting some of the best and most reliable resources on ASDs from our own collection and online.


Professional Associations and Organizations:
  • Autism Society of America - national, non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of those on the spectrum, raising public awareness of the disorder, and providing access to the latest research advancements.
  • National Database for Autism Research - National Institutes of Health-funded research data repository that collects, stores, and disseminates data gathered from autism research into one comprehensive collection.

Consumer/Patient Information:
  • MedlinePlus: Autism - From the National Library of Medicine, National Institutes of Health, this site provides access to free, easy-to-read, and reliable health information. The autism topic page includes disorder overviews, clinical trials, the latest research, as well as links to statistics and organizations.
  • CDC's Interactive Tools to Track Child Development - includes checklists and knowledge quizzes dedicated to tracking the major child milestones from birth to five years as well as information on what to do if you suspect problems with your child's development.

Enhancing Engagement at Conferences and Events with Twitter

Part 1: Backchannels: The Basics Conferences are a great opportunity to engage with colleagues over topics of shared interest. Backchannels expand this opportunity by providing an open online "forum" using Twitter. Participants are able to use their phones and/or mobile devices to engage each other in conversation relating to the conference event and share relevant ideas and/or links to related materials.

A backchannel works through the use of a predetermined hashtag (#MedEdWk13, for example).  A hashtag is an abbreviated subject term that is preceded by a # symbol, and can be searched in Twitter to retrieve posts relating to a particular topic. While a good portion of backchannel conversation is typical social back-and-forth, there are often threads of substance, particularly during or after talks in which a topic of great interest is discussed.

Take the backchannel running "behind" the 2013 Canadian Conference on Medical Education, held in April in Quebec City.  Browsing the transcript of the #CCME13 backchannel hashtag, you can find tweets:

  • Recommending Posters: #ccme13 @rjhogue on e-book participant the poster hall
  • Posing Questions: RT @LawMarcus: Do schools have standard evaluation forms of elearning modules or teaching methods? #ccme13
  • Inviting Further Participation in Online Meetings: Would love perspective of experts at #CCME13 & #SGM2013 -join #hcsmca 4/24, 9pm for student digital footprint #meded
  • Taking Polls on Relevant Topics: R/T Poll: Has your medschool transitioned to a 'paperless curriculum'? How do U like it? #Meded #ccme13 #PaperTiger

Part 2: Tips on How to Engage in Conversation on a Backchannel

  1. Find out the backchannel hashtag designated for an upcoming event (such as #MedEdWk13 for the upcoming OUWB Medical Education Week)
  2. During the event, search for the hashtag in your Twitter app to see what people are posting
  3. Watch who posts the most relevant information on topics of interest to you; this might be someone to follow!
  4. You may frequently see the initials RT or R/T with no indication as to what they mean. 
    1. RT = ReTweet, which is someone sharing an interesting post with their followers
    2. R/T = RealTime, which references something that just happened.
  5. Feel free to jump in and post a question or response.
  6. Check out the Healthcare Conference Archive via Symplur for backchannels at recent and upcoming healthcare conferences. Browsing the transcripts is a great way to pick up items of interest from conferences you are unable to attend.

Information Mastery Program with CME Credit continues in May!

The May CME session will be offered at Beaumont Hospital Royal Oak, Troy, and Grosse Pointe. William Beaumont Hospital designates this training activity for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s).
  • May: Online Collaboration Tools There's a lot more than e-mail available to enhance remote collaboration. A variety of free online tools provide collaborators with the ability to meet, teach, and mentor remotely, share notes, files, and research bibliographies. This session will provide an overview of several categories of collaboration tools, including Evernote, Dropbox, Google Drive, and Google Hangout, and will discuss issues such as system requirements, password overload, content preservation and privacy.

Resource Updates

Trial Resources The Medical LIbrary currently has trial access to two databases from OVID. Both databases are available via the following link.
  • Health and Psychosocial Instruments provides access to information on approximately 15,000 measurement instruments including questionnaires, interview schedules, checklists, coding schemes, rating scales in the fields of health and psychosocial sciences. This database may help  both faculty and students for scholarly, educational, or Capstone projects!

    The full-text of the instruments are not included in the database; however, HaPI can be used to:

    • Discover what instruments exist;
    • Determine the availability of reliability and validity evidence;
    • Track the history of an instrument over time;
    • See what other instruments have already developed in your field of study;
    • Locate ordering information for a known instrument.
  • AMIRSYS Imaging Resource Center is a comprehensive source of radiology references for all medical professionals - not just radiologists - who work with imaging tests. It offers a combination of high-quality images, classical diagnoses, and evidence-based clinical content including 72,000 x-ray, CT, MR, and ultrasound illustrations and images, plus expert, evidence-based content - including over 4,000 diagnoses - provided by imaging experts.
